Trades Academy

A new trades training initiative has started in Kaikōura that will see students from Kaikōura High School gain building and carpentry skills while still continuing with their study. With building activity in Kaikōura planned to be on the increase, this initiative will see sought after industry skills being taught that will increase the young peoples' chance of employment. This initiative has commenced this term and is being supported by Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle and his Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs team from Te Hā o Mātauranga.

The aim of the course is to give our youth some ready to work skills and practical building skills. Lately we have been meeting builders and their apprentices to talk about their experiences transitioning from school into the workplace and the builders' expectations of their apprentices. During Term 1 the group concentrated on health & safety required in the construction industry such as first aid, site safety and working at heights. Term 2 will see the team starting to construct sleep outs.

All participants have been allocated full PPE such as boots, gloves and a starter pack tool kit to assist in their journey.
