We run a variety of youth development programmes...

Ko Wai Au? Who am I?

With funding from the Ministry of Youth Development, we offer 10 mini projects each year. These are developed in line with what the young people want to do and are about exploring identity and making connections. Projects have included graffiti workshops, digital art murals, leadership training, improv drama, mau rakau, girls outdoor adventure groups, special effects makeup and a heap more!

Whakaaro Nui...

Dreaming big - we are working with youth to grow entrepreneurial skills! Our programme this year has included The Social Experiment and Fast Fail. We've brought in a careers coach and worked through different processes like co-design and lean canvas. Fast Fail is an awesome project with our budding entrepreneurs being given $100 each and 5 weeks of tutorials/coaching, to allow for rapid experimentation of ideas and to lear from doing - an experimental approach to learning. We are amazed at the creative ideas the rangatahi are having and look forward to seeing their enterprises take shape!

Youth Council

We are employed by Kaikōura District Council to coordinate the Kaikōura Youth Council. The Kaikōura youth council is a group of young people, open to 12 - 24 yr olds. KYC runs events for others in the community, such as the bienniel Kaikōura Youth Awards, and activities during Youth Week in May each year. They also have representatives on community groups and trusts, in order to ensure youth voice is present in the decisions that are made for our community. Their main goal is for Kaikōura youth to be optimistic, confident and make valued contributions. They meet weekly on a Tuesday from 3pm - 4.30pm at Te Hā O Mātauranga, 14 Ludstone Road. For more information about KYC visit their website: kaikourayouthcouncil.org.nz. Youth Employability Programmes

Our Youth Employability Programmes (YEP) are all about the soft skills that relate to how you work. These skills include how you interact with others, solve problems and manage your work.
We offer four different programmes:

  • Tahi Rangatahi - For youth who are not in education.
  • Kare Toa - A continuation of our first Tahi Rangatahi group, where the participants can continue to connect, and grow as a group and individuals.
  • ASAP (After School Aspiration Programme) - This is a ten week programme for youth aged 12-14. This programme involves writing a CV, setting up practice interviews and more. The programme is fun, practical and activity based - we include vocational pathways, work experience and exploration.
  • We also run a weekly group with senior students at Kaikōura High School.

Rosie Poharama-Hepi is our Youth Employability Facilitator - delivering the Youth Employability Programmes alongside the rest of the team. These programmes come from the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs funding; to find out more about employment opportunities, and the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs visit here.
