We run a variety of youth development programmes...

Kaikōura Youth Programme

This year we are delivering a new Youth Programme... Keep an eye out here for more updates!

Youth Council

We are employed by Kaikōura District Council to coordinate the Kaikōura Youth Council. The Kaikōura youth council is a group of young people, open to 12 - 24 yr olds. KYC runs events for others in the community, such as the bienniel Kaikōura Youth Awards, and activities during Youth Week in May each year. They also have representatives on community groups and trusts, in order to ensure youth voice is present in the decisions that are made for our community. Their main goal is for Kaikōura youth to be optimistic, confident and make valued contributions. They meet fortnightly on a Tuesday from 3pm - 4.30pm at either Te Hā O Mātauranga, 14 Ludstone Road or the Kaikōura District Council chambers. For more information about KYC visit their website: kaikourayouthcouncil.org.nz. To get in touch email kkyouthcouncil@gmail.com or get in touch with their coordinator; Elbie Burnett on 027 644 6144, or email elbie@kaikoura.link

Lateral Youth

Lateral Youth is a vibrant space that invites rangatahi aged 12-24 to hangout and have fun. Taking place on every Friday, Term 1 and Term 3 of 2024, from 4pm - 5.30pm, Lateral Youth provides a great opportunity for individuals to unwind, connect and make lasting memories. We are a youth led group which takes young people's activity ideas and puts them into action. In recent months, we have had pool parties, beach days, talent shows and more. We work hard to ensure everyone leaves feeling filled with laughter, a sense of belonging and new experiences. If you would like to join in on the action, you can usually find us at the Scout Hall or get in touch with Elbie on 027 644 6144. Snacks may be provided and participants will need to fill out a Parental Consent Form.

Youth Employability Programmes

We are changing up how we deliver our Youth Employability Programmes for 2023. These programmes come from the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs funding; to find out more about employment opportunities, and the Mayor's Taskforce for Jobs visit here. Keep an eye out in 2024 for our upcoming YEP opportunities!

Our Youth Employability Programmes (YEP) are all about the soft skills that relate to how you work. These skills include how you interact with others, solve problems and manage your work.
We have previously offered four different programmes:

  • Tahi Rangatahi - For youth who are not in education.
  • Kare Toa - A continuation of our first Tahi Rangatahi group, where the participants could continue to connect and grow as a group and individuals.
  • ASAP (After School Aspiration Programme) - This is a ten week programme for youth aged 12-14. This programme involved writing a CV, setting up practice interviews and more. The programme was fun, practical and activity based - we included vocational pathways, work experience and exploration.
  • We also ran a weekly group with senior students at Kaikōura High School.
