We are really proud of one of our Youth Council members, Petra Jellyman, who was awarded the Tūao Volunteer Award at the Ministry of Youth Development national awards recently. There were 14 winners across the 7 categories.

Petra has been active volunteer in the Kaikoura community for many years, across a range of organisations and opportunities. The article below was written by David Hill of the North Canterbury News and sums up Petra and her mahi really well.

Partnership in Action!

21st Jun 2019

We have the priviledge to work with many youth in our day to day mahi at Te Hā o Mātauranga. One of the really inspiring parts of our work is coordinating the Kaikōura Youth Council.

Kaikōura District Council values a youth voice in all decision making. KDC therefore funds a Youth Coordinator role to manage and assist Kaikōura Youth Council with day to day running of the group, as well as events and activities.

This role is currently contracted to Te Hā o Mātauranga – Learning in Kaikōura. Community Development at Council works with the Youth Coordinator to ensure youth voice is well represented in decision making and Council matters.

To get in touch with the Youth Coordinator, email Vicki or give her a call on 027 564 8407
To get in touch with Community Development, email Kim or give her a call on 0277 268 349

Off to a busy start...

7th Jan 2019

We are back on board for 2019 with heaps of plans for the year ahead and how we can support, encourage and promote learning opportunities in Kaikōura.

For the rest of the holidays we have maths for school students on Mondays (3pm - 4.30pm) and Wednesdays (1pm - 2.30pm). This is a math games group that enhances and builds basic facts. We welcome parents to join in as there are a multitude of ways that you can continue to support maths learning at home.

We've also partnered with Knowledgeable Communities (supported by University of Canterbury) to work with Year 12 Biology students from Kaikōura High School, filming and analysing tourist interactions with seals. This will form part of their NCEA Level 2 for term 1. If you know of Year 12 Bio students for this year, please pass this info on to them - they can join in anytime.

Keep an eye out for our holiday reading programme - this builds on the Reading Together programme we ran for the Ministry of Education in partnership with Hapuku School. We hope to have finalised details out mid-week.

2019 looks to be a busy year - come and talk to us about your learning goals/aspriations and dreams!

Closed for Christmas!

21st Dec 2018

Well the summer break has rolled around and we are away for a couple of weeks! We will be back on board on Monday 7th January, 2019. The Community Shed will reopen on Wednesday 9th January.

Have a safe and happy Christmas season everyone!

Seaside Sounds

17th Dec 2018

Seaside Sounds was another amazing event for the Youth of Kaikōura. Being so close to Christmas it was a fun end of year event for everyone to come together and celebrate. There was lots of laughter and smiles shared by everyone there. Some of the highlights were the Spiderman obstacle course, the wipe out machine, and of course the foam party inside the igloo.
The Kaikoura Youth Council did a great job at pulling this all together at such a busy time of the year!

Cyanotype Printing

30th Oct 2018

Susie Baker - Fine Art Photography has been running day long workshops at Te Hā, teaching the art of Cyanotype Printing.  This is the earliest form of photography, dating back to 1842.

Susie works with small groups to teach them the technical skills needed and encourages them to use their own materials and ideas to create their own prints.

The photos demonstrate part of the technique used. Susie has another workshop this week and is running three more in March 2019. You can book via 021 0243 2730
